Semester Ketiga (The Third Semester)

Ini akan menjadi post yang panjang, siap-siap ya!

Akhirnya semester 3 usai juga. Sekarang saya sedang dalam minggu ujian akhir semester. Setelah minggu ujian ini selesai, aku berencana magang dan liburan di Bali. Yeay!
The third semester is finally over. I am now on the end-term examination week. After our test is done, I am planning to do internship and diving at Bali. Hurray!

Semester 3 ini cukup sibuk. Aku mengambil 24 SKS, 6 diantaranya adalah SKS praktikum. Hahahaha udah bisa dibayangin lah ya capeknya kayak apa. Mata kuliah yang kuambil adalah Biokimia, Biologi Laut, Biologi Perikanan, Dasar-Dasar Teknologi Ikan, Bahasa Inggris, Limnologi, Perancangan Percobaan, dan mata kuliah khusus Akuakultur yaitu Tanah dan Irigasi Perikanan. Selain itu, aku juga mengambil Dasar-Dasar Penyuluhan dan Komunikasi Pertanian dari semester 5.
The third semester made us busy as heck. Moreover, I took 24 credits, 6 of them are practical credits. Hahaha, you can imagine it right away. Courses I took were Biochemistry, Marine Biology, Fisheries Biology, Basic Fish Technology, English, Limnology, Experiment Design, and special aquaculture course that is Soil Science and Fisheries Irrigation. I also took Basic Extension and Communication of Agriculture from the upper semester, the fifth one.

Biokimia, seperti yang kalian ketahui, mempelajari aspek biologi dan kimia makhluk hidup. Contohnya air, lemak, gula dan karbohidrat, protein dan asam amino, enzim, metabolisme, anabolisme, katabolisme, RNA, dan DNA. Praktikumnya terdiri dari 5 acara, dan dilaksanakan di Laboratorium Terpadu Agrokompleks. Cukup mengesalkan, namun pada acara DNA kita berlatih memvisualisasikan DNA menggunakan elektroforesis.
Biochemistry as you know, study the biological and chemistry aspect of living things. For instance water, fat, carbohydrate, protein, amino acids, enzyme, metabolism, anabolism, catabolism, RNA and DNA. Practice was only consisted of 5 meetings, and conducted at Agrocomplex Integrated Laboratory. It's suck (the lab assistant). But at DNA topic we trained to visualize DNA using electroforesis.

Di Biologi Laut membahas mengenai air laut, fisika laut, dan terutama biologi laut seperti zonasi biota laut, produktivitas primer perairan, lamun, rumput laut, hutan bakau, estuari, intertidal, subtidal, laut dalam, dan terumbu karang. Praktikum Biologi Laut hanya sedikit dan dilakukan di Laboratorium Hidrobiologi. Ada acara chlorophyta, paeophyta, rhodophyta, formasi pes-caprae, dan hutan bakau, dan herbarium. Yang paling asyik adalah praktikum lapangan. Kita menuju Pantai Sepanjang (lagi, hehe), dan meneliti biodiversitas rumput laut yang ada di zona intertidal. Caranya adalah dengan membagi zona intertidal menjadi 3 zona, dengan jarak antar zona 15 meter, lalu dengan menggunakan kuadrat plot 1x1 m yang terbagi menjadi 16 kotakan, diletakkan di zona 1 hingga 3 sembari menghitung jumlah dan besaran tutupan makroalga yang ada di plot tersebut. Juga mengidentifikasi jenis makroalga. Setelah itu kita melakukan pengambilan sampel yang akan dibuat herbarium. 
In Marine Biology, we study about salt water, ocean physics, marine zone and biota, primary productivity, seagrass, seaweed, mangroves, estuary, intertidal, subtidal, deep ocean, and coral reef. The practice at Hidrobiology lab was simple. For example, the topics are chlorophyta, paeophyta, rhodophyta, pes-caprae formation, mangroves, and herbarium. The most exciting one is field practice, where we headed to Sepanjang Beach, and study the makroalgae biodiversity at intertidal zone. How to? We simply divide intertidal zone to 3 zone, in between is 15 meter. Then we use the quadratic plot with 16 part to count seaweed and how many it covers the part. After we identified those algae, we took several samples to be used as herbarium.

UGM Aquaculture Technology and Management (Aquaculture for short) class of 2018 at Sepanjang Beach. Guess which one is me?

Selanjutnya ada Biologi Perikanan. Isinya mengenai aspek biologi ikan, sampai ke interaksi ikan dengan lingkungan hidupnya seperti sumberdaya perikanan, distribusi dan persyaratan hidup, taksonomi ikan, umur dan perilaku ikan, makan dan kebiasaan ikan, aspek reproduksi seperti fekunditas, indeks kematangan gonad, tingkat kematangan gonad, lalu ada pendugaan populasi, penelitian perikanan, tagging dan marking, dan masalah pengelolaan perikanan. Praktikumnya juga ribet ada 10 acara tapi seru. Kita menebar benih ikan nila, dan dibesarkan selama sebulan. Laporannya dikerjakan dalam 1 malam hahaha. Lalu ada pembedaan jantan betina, TKG dan IKG, lalu fekunditas ikan. Kita menghitung telur ikan satu per satu, telur yang kuhitung mencapai ribuan loh. Hubungan panjang-berat ikan, faktor kondisi ikan, pengawetan telur, periodisitas makan dan studi isi saluran pencernaan ikan. Praktikumnya ketat sekali, ga ada foto di lab :(
Fisheries Biology study the biological aspect of fish, their interaction with other and their living environment, distribution and living requirement, taxonomy, age and fish behavior, food and feeding habits, reproduction aspect like fecundity, gonad somatic index (GSI), population estimation, fisheries research and study, marking and tagging, and fisheries problems. The practice were hard because it consist of 10 topics, but it's pretty fun in a way. We stocked up fish and keep them for one month. The report must be collected the next day after harvesting the fish so we stayed up all night long. Then there is male-and-female distinction, GSI, and fecundity. We count Clarias sp. eggs one by one, I counted thousand of them. Next are length-and-weight relationship, ponderal index, eggs preservation, feed periodicity, and study the content of the disgestive tract. The practice were strict, we ain't got no picture in lab :(

Dasar-Dasar Teknologi Ikan akan mempelajari sifat fisika, kimia, dan mikrobiologi ikan. Selain itu kita juga mempelajari otot daging ikan, kontraksi dan relaksasinya, serta hubungannya dengan kualitas ikan. Selanjutnya ada nilai gizi ikan, pengawetan ikan berbagai macam metode, penggunaan suhu rendah dan suhu tinggi pada ikan, peningkatan nilai ikan, penambahan bahan, dan quality control dan quality assurance (ISO, HACCP, GMP)
In Basic Fish Technology we study the physical, chemical, and microbiological properties of fish. We also study the muscle type, contraction and relaxation, and it's relation with fish quality. Afterwards, there are nutritional value of fish, fish preservation with many methods, the use of high and low temp on fish, added value of fish, additive, quality control and quality assurance (ISO, HACCP, GMP use)

Bahasa inggris skip aja lah yaa, soalnya hanya diisi dialog dan presentasi. Nilai ACEPT ku dulu 330, itu setara TOEFL 550 kalau tidak salah. Lalu saya juga mencoba tes di lembaga IONs, nilai TOEFL PBT/ITP-ku hanya 580. Dalan mata kuliah ini kita diminta mempresentasikan sesuatu. Kami mempresentasikan penangkapan IUU di Indonesia, membahas tentang penangkapan kapal IFV Viking dan penenggelaman kapal di mata internasional. 
Well, english course is simple. Because of my good grade in TOEFL and ACEPT, I don't have to take exams. Ah, I also have to present a topic about fisheries, so I choose topic about IUU (Illegal, Unreported, Unregulated) Fishing in Indonesia, the sinking IFV Viking and it's relevance with international laws.

Limnologi kurang lebih sama seperti Ekologi Perairan, limnologi sendiri ilmu yang mempelajari air yang berada di darat, seperti DAS atau sungai, dan danau. Selain itu juga sifat fisika, kimia, dan biologi perairan. Praktikumnya sangat singkat. Praktikum lapangan dilakukan di Danau Kebijakan (Lembah UGM) pukul 06:00 sampai 18:00, mantap! Isinya seperti kecerahan air, diversitas dan densitas plankton, pH, suhu, DO, CO2, BO, dan BOD5.
Next is Limnology. It's basically the same as aquatic ecology, but we study the terrestrial water like river, watershed, lake and reservoir. We study the physical, chemical, and biological aspect of aquatic ecosystem. The practice were fun and simple. We got to record the water quality of Wisdom Lake at Gadjah Mada University from 06:00 in the morning until 18:00 in the evening. We record the water turbidity, Dissolved Oxygen, Dissolved CO2, pH, temperature, Organic Matter, and Biochemical Oxygen Demand, every 3 hour. Noice :)

Perancangan Percobaan ribet dan pusiing. Isinya rumus-rumus semua di kelas. Tapi praktikumnya cukup mudah karena menggunakan program R Studio. Kurang lebih mirip mata kuliah Statistika. Kata-kata penting seperti DB, JK, H0, H1, alfa selalu membayangi. Sampai syntax pun hafal! Bagi kalian yang suka mengolah data, nanti kalian pasti suka mata kuliah ini kok. Bingung yah belum ada gambaran? Jalani aja dulu hehehe. Di praktikum acara terakhir, kita diminta melakukan percobaan, kelompok kita kebagian tema percobaan tingkat kematian anakan lele dengan perlakuan konsentrasi garam / salinitas air. Asyik pokoknya. 
The Experiment Design course made my head spin right around baby right round... just kidding. It consisted of numbers and formulas. But the practice were simple because we use R Studio. It was more or less like the Statistic course I took. In the last meeting before the test, we were told to design an experiment. We got a topic about the Survival Rate of fish in different salinity. It was pretty fun.

Mata kuliah khusus Akuakultur BDP yaitu Tanah dan Irigasi Perikanan. Disini kita mendapatkan ilmu tanah, mulai dari jenis tanah, fisika dan kimia tanah, irigasi, kebutuhan air, kemiringan irigasi, dan lain-lain. Dosen kami monoton sekali dan selalu mengulang-ulang hal yang sama jadi kami cepat bosan. Maaf kalau tidak banyak yang bisa diceritakan ya.
In the Soil and Fisheries Irrigation, we study the soil science to irrigation. I'm sorry I cannot tell you a lot about it because the prof were monotone and always repeating what he said :( we got bored 5 minutes into the class.

Terakhir, aku mengambil Dasar-Dasar Penyuluhan dan Komunikasi Pertanian. Disini intinya adalah menyuluh, dan membuat alat peraga penyuluhan seperti flyer, poster, dan leaflet. Menjadi perantara antara peneliti dengan petani, yaitu proses diseminasi dengan cara menyuluh. Praktikumnya sangat santai dan isinya jalan-jalan. Kita pergi ke Joglo Tani untuk mewawancara petani, selain itu kita juga mewawancara kelompok tani. Kelompokku mewawancarai kelompok petani cabai di Sleman, dan menawarkan solusi harga cabai dengan pelelangan melalui Balai Lelang Cabai. Tidak ada UAS, malah diganti tugas hahahaha. Tugas kelompokku yaitu menyuluhkan inovasi dari Laboratorium Hama dan Penyakit Ikan, yaitu Gama Algin. 
Lastly, I took Basic Extension and Communication of Agriculture. The essence of this course is to do the extension and dissemination of innovation to user, like farmers. We also make extension media such as flyer, poster, and leaflet. The practice were simple because we do a lot of visiting and interviewing to farmer. My group interview chili farmer in Sleman, and offering the solution of their problem which is fluctuative price of chili with Chili Auction Hall. There is no end-term examination, but we have to extent the innovation from designated lab to farmers or fish breeders. We got the Laboratory of Fish Pest and Disease. The result is Gama Algin.
